VIDEO OF THE DAY

Trainspotting (1996)

Available to stream on Showtime.

Before the sands of Tatooine, Ewan McGregor knew the streets of Edinburgh well. In Trainspottingthe Scottish actor plays Mark Renton, a man who has a substance abuse disorder and is trying to enter a rehab program to help him recover.

As the narrator, McGregor delivers the film’s most relevant quotes, and that’s one of the things that makes Renton the best character in Trainspotting. It’s no coincidence that it’s one of McGregor’s most popular projects, and it was a milestone in his early career. For those looking for non-Jedi representation, this one is a must.

Fargo – Season 3 (2017)

Available to stream on Hulu.

If one Ewan McGregor performance isn’t enough, why not take a double dose? In season 3 of Fargo, McGregor splits his talent between siblings with very different personalities and nails both parties. Far from Jedi teachings, the two brothers are cynical and greedy in their ways.

That doesn’t make them Fargo’s most likable characters, but they illustrate just how talented McGregor is. Both of those performances won the actor an Emmy in 2017, and his dual portrayal remains one of the TV show’s highlights.

Halton (2021)

Available to stream on Netflix.

Halston (Ewan McGregor) fights over the rights to his name in Netflix's Halston

McGregor’s acting lineup comes as no surprise as he delivers one impressive performance after another, no matter how different the roles. In the show, Halston, he fills the American fashion designer’s fancy shoes, stealing the show with his candid portrayal. The actor also received an Emmy for this role as well.

From his place in stardom to unfortunate professional decadence, the actor takes audiences on a journey through the glories and heartaches of Halston’s life while raising awareness of Halston’s experience with HIV in the 1980s.

The Men Who Stare at the Goats (2009)

Available to stream on Netflix.

Ewan McGregor and George Clooney in The Men Who Stare at Goats.

In the particular The men who watch the goatsMcGregor plays a journalist who travels to Iraq only to prove a point to his ex-wife, and there he meets a psychic American soldier.

With George Clooney, the actor delivers one of the funniest performances of his career in this satire which curiously involves the army’s special forces program called the “Jedi” program. This role is another one of McGregor’s characters who seems to have a flair for wilderness adventures, though The Force has nothing to do with the psychic powers shown in this one.

Last Days in the Desert (2015)

Available to stream on fuboTV.

Ewan McGregor as Jesus in The Last Days in the Wilderness.

Among many Star Wars memes, referring to Obi-Wan as “Space Jesus” has been a fan-favorite joke. In Last days in the desert, Ewan McGregor portrayed the biblical figure, coincidentally or not. Although this film does not have a high rating on IMDb, the sight of Ewan McGregor wandering in a desert seems too familiar for a star wars fan.

The movie’s scenes resemble the Sands of Tatooine, and it’s the closest thing to the “Space Jesus” visual that McGregor has gotten, at least until Obi Wan Kenobi is released.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

Available to stream on HBO Max.

Doctor Sleep Gate

Horror isn’t beyond the actor’s reach, either. In one of his last roles, McGregor played the adult version of Dan Torrance in Doctor Sleepa film set years after the events of the classic the brilliant (1980).

While Doctor Sleep was a box office failure, the same cannot be said for McGregor’s portrayal in the film. Regardless of the unpopular ending, McGregor displays his usual talent as Danny, and his acting makes him a practical option in his filmography.

Birds of Prey (2020)

Available to stream on HBO Max.

In his velvet tuxedos, black eyeliner and sadistic attitude, Ewan McGregor has made Black Mask one of the most entertaining and chilling villains in recent DC projects.

While the actor’s role in Birds of prey isn’t the main subject of the film, McGregor’s performance of Roman Sionis is one of the highlights, thanks in large part to the flair he brings to the character. With Obi-Wan in mind, this portrayal becomes especially amusing given that the actor enjoys himself in a way that well-composed Kenobi hardly can.

Red Mill! (2001)

Available to stream on Paramount+.

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor at the Moulin Rouge!

Do Jedi Masters Dance? Maybe not, but Ewan McGregor yes. Before starring in the iconic role of Kenobi, the actor was famous for his energetic performance in the musical Red Mill!.

As a bohemian poet, McGregor dances and sings in this unique visual experience directed by Baz Luhrmann. Given that the only choreography Kenobi employs is dedicated to lightsaber combat, this film is a fantastic choice for those who want to see more of the actor’s talents.

Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Available to stream on Disney+.

Obi-Wan on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith

Nothing like a rewatch to prepare for the next leg of the journey. Revenge of the Sith needs no introduction since it was the film responsible for cementing McGregor’s Kenobi into the history of star wars and arguably the best the prequels had to offer. Chronologically, this is the best option to look before Obi Wan Kenobi came out as it positions the viewer right after Anakin’s destruction and Vader’s rise.

Revisiting this in anticipation of the next show makes it all the more exciting, and it’s a reminder for fans to rejoice that the days of Ewan McGregor missing as Obi-Wan Kenobi are now long gone.
